Operating somewhere between the delusions of satisfaction and embarrassment, I think about embracing and concealing short-comings, and inability to attain function or preparedness. There is a comforting beauty in mismatched function and form, and stability in the under-performing. At present, I am heavily influenced by fables, children’s books, the comics collected in my youth.

Elena Hutchings is a Baltimore artist, currently working in water color, gouache, ink, and pencil on paper illustrations. While generally appealing, though with often awkward features and attributes, the figures and in her small drawings possess a mysterious purpose and disjointed sensuality.
